Tips for Healthy Lawn Care and Landscapes
Starter Fetilizer
When planting new sod, seed or sprigs, be sure to apply starter fertilizer according to label instructions. This will promote healthy root growth, green up the new grass faster and promote a well established lawn. And, very importantly, water liberally for approximately a month based on rainfall.
Mower Height
Be careful not to cut off more than one third of a grass plant's blade. Warm season grasses like Bermuda and Zoysia are happy at about 1 to 1.5 inches, and cooler weather grasses like Fescue are happy at about 3 inches. When warm season grasses are dormant in winter or very early spring, it is generally safe to make a close cut to clear out some thatch, but no more than once a year.
Mulching Mower
Using a mulching mower vs a bagging mower provides much needed nourishment to your lawn. Grass clippings rapidly decompose and are returned as a valuable source of nitrogen. A mulching mower can naturally provide up to one third of the nutrients a lawn would otherwise require from fertilizer on an annual basis.
Mulch
Mulching your shrubbery and beds helps retain moisture, suppresses weed growth and regulates soil temperature. The big box stores provide two cubic feet bags which are great for small projects, and Green Tree Landscapers can provide truckloads for larger projects. Organic mulch is one of your landscape's best friends!
Belmuda
Be careful not to make a mistake when selecting a location for Bermuda sod or seed (Atlantans love their Bermuda!). For the most part, Bermuda simply won't grow in a partially shaded location (and certainly not in full shade). There are certain Bermuda types that suppliers claim to be shade tolerant. Buyer beware and ask around before making a largeinvestment. For the most part, Bermuda simply loves sunshine - a lot of it! Consider types of Zoysia or Fescue for more shaded areas.
Water Wisely
Water early in the morning so that some drying will occur before fungus becomes a problem. Water deeply occasionally rather than watering lightly daily. For new sod or seed, water librally for approximately a month depending on the ammount of rainfall recevied.
Fertilizing
Be sure to follow label instructions when applying fertilizer. Using too much fertilizer or applying in hot dry conditions or applying too often can burn your lawn and do more harm than good. All that said, fertilizing, when done properly, can make the difference between a sick and healthy plant.
Consider a Pro
Before tackling a landscaping project on your own, do an honest assessment of the amount of time and exertion required. Small manageable projects done well can bring a lot of satisfaction. Other projects of medium and large scope often require the services of a professional. Call Green Tree Landscapers and Alejandro will be happy to provide a free estimate!
